Details on Microsoft 365 group restore with FluentPro Backup

In this article we will explain the specifics of Microsoft 365 group restore for the Planner environment with FluentPro Backup.

Details on data deletion and recovery from Microsoft:

1. When the Microsoft 365 group is deleted, everything that is related to this group will be permanently deleted, including conversations, files, the group notebook, Planner tasks, and Team in the Microsoft Teams app. If you deleted the group by mistake, you can ask your IT Admin to recover the group within 30 days of it being deleted. Then all the mentioned data connected to the group is recovered along with it. (Source - Delete a group in Outlook)

2. If a Planner Plan is deleted (without a group), then this Plan, all Plan buckets, tasks, and related data will be deleted. There is no way to restore the Plan using the out-of-the-box functionality provided by Microsoft. (Source - Delete a task or plan)

3. If a MS Teams Team connected to a Microsoft 365 group and a Planner Plan is deleted from the Microsoft Teams app, the Microsoft 365 group will be deleted as well including all the related files, conversations, the group notebook, and Planner tasks. IT Admin can recover this group within 30 days of it being deleted. (Source - Delete a team in Microsoft Teams)

The difference between Microsoft 365 group recovery from Microsoft Azure and FluentPro Backup:

  • Restore of the Microsoft 365 group from Microsoft Azure will recover the group itself and all the related data:  conversations, files, the group notebook, Planner tasks, and Team in the Microsoft Teams app.
  • Restoring a Microsoft 365 group using FluentPro Backup, the process in a nutshell is creating a new group using the data from the backup copy taken by the software. In this case, if a group was deleted less than 30 days ago, and you restored it using FluentPro Backup, you can even go to Microsoft Azure > Deleted groups (https://portal.azure.com/#view/Microsoft_AAD_IAM/GroupsManagementMenuBlade/~/DeletedGroups) and you will see that the group is still there in the list of deleted items. Again, this is because during the restore process, FluentPro Backup created a new group, not restored it from Microsoft Azure.

Additionally, the process of Microsoft 365 group restore with FluentPro Backup only supports the data listed in the Supported Entities. One should be aware, that any entities not included to the list (such as conversations, files, the group notebook, Planner tasks (unless the Plan is also being restored by FluentPro Backup), and Team in the Microsoft Teams app), are not supported for restoration.

Summary:

The restoration of the Microsoft 365 group using FluentPro Backup does not have the same outcome as restoring it from Microsoft Azure. FluentPro Backup will restore only the data listed in the Supported Entities article.

In case you restore the Microsoft 365 group and Planner Plan, that were connected to an MS Teams Team using FluentPro Backup, you will need to re-create a Team in the Microsoft Teams app (if needed). One should keep in mind, that any data deleted from the Teams is not supported for restoration using FluentPro Backup.
