In Simple mode Widget Editor supports a limited set of EPM Pulse features and allows working with a limited set of data structures. In case you need more flexibility, you can switch Widget Editor to the advanced mode that allows editing SQL queries and widget data sources manually.
To switch editor to Advanced mode click Simple in the toolbar and then select Advanced.
After that 3 additional tabs will became visible in the widget editor: SQL, Data Source, Widget XML.
