FluentBooks crashes on License screen
- You have Windows 7/8/8.1 or Server 2008R2/2012/2012R2 installed
- When you open FluentBooks and navigate to the License screen application crashes
- The computer ID field on the License screen remains blank
- Event Viewer shows Problem Event Name as “BEX” and Application name “hid.exe”
This error refers to 3rd party application “hid.exe” which we use to determine hardware id, a part of licensing process. The issue is caused by hid.exe being blocked by Windows Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature.
Open Control Panel, click on System and Security > System > Advanced System Settings. In the Advanced tab, click on the Settings button in the Performance section. In Performance Options, find the Data Execution Prevention tab and switch the setting to “Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only” or add “hid.exe” as an exception by clicking on the “Add” button and navigating to the FluentBooks installation folder.
